The Future of Chery in South Africa | DigiCars Blog
Remember that first time you spotted a Chery Tiggo zipping through Joburg traffic? These compact, sure-footed cars pack features that punch above their weight, turning heads as they blend sturdy engineering with prices that don't sting nearly as much as other cars in their class.
But if you're eyeing your next set of wheels, you might wonder where it's all headed next. With whispers of local builds and a slew of electrified options on the horizon, Chery could reshape how we think about dependable daily drivers in SA.
Let’s take a look at the shifts that may keep this Chinese contender rolling strong for years to come.
What Hybrid Expansions Are Hitting SA Roads This Year?
Chery has dialled up its electric game hard in 2025, rolling out hybrids across its core lineup to tackle fuel costs head-on.
The Tiggo 7 Pro and Tiggo 8 Pro now offer plug-in setups with that Super Hybrid system, blending a 1.5T engine and electric boost for outputs around 175 kW, giving drivers enough pep for overtaking without guzzling too much fuel.
Then the Tiggo 9 follows suit, packing a dedicated hybrid mill that hits 455 kW total while sipping just 5.2 litres per 100 km.
These cars are tuned for our mix of highways and backroads, with batteries that recharge on the go. You might notice the Tiggo 4 Pro Cross CSH getting a hybrid twist too, making compact crossovers more wallet-friendly for urban dashes.
How Close Are We to Local Chery Builds?
Word's out on Chery scouting plant-sharing deals right here in SA, possibly kicking off late this year or early in 2026. If it pans out, you’ll get faster access to Chery parts, cutting those annoying delays on services or swaps.
While there’s no full factory yet, the feasibility explorations signal real intent, especially with hybrids leading the charge. If it happens, it will ease supply kinks and could even lead to tweaked models that will offer a bit of local grit, like beefier underbodies for gravel hauls, maybe.
Which Sub-Brands Will Broaden Chery's Reach?
Omoda and Jaecoo are already pulling weight, but 2025 has seen six fresh drops under them, like the Omoda C9 PHEV for efficient family space and the Jaecoo J7 plug-in.
Looking to 2026, Lepas will step in with leopard-inspired designs on the L4 SUV and L8, likely hybrid-equipped for improved agility.
iCaur is Chery’s EV play, aimed at quick-charge compacts that fit charging spots popping up around Gauteng.
